As the DOJ wryly notes, Zhong’s BTC stash was the biggest cryptocurrency amount ever recovered in a law enforcement operation, based on rates at the time of the bust, though now it’s considered only second-best. That’s not to say that the entire deep web consists of these difficult-to-find websites. Many regular websites now also offer onion addresses (basically the .com or .net of the deep net) you can use to access said sites through the deep web, with examples ranging from DuckDuckGo to ProPublica and even social media sites like Facebook. The fundamental purpose of the deep web is to provide a way for people to browse the internet and host websites without the potential for being tracked or monitored.
But…”Now even small sites have to do the hosting themselves,” said BTCX, the proprietor of OnionNews, a regularly-updated Dark Net news blog. “Stop funding the state with your tax dollars and direct your productive energies into the black market,” he told me in an article I wrote about Silk Road in 2011, which first brought it to public attention. On his LinkedIn profile he described his current project, presumably Silk Road, as an “economic simulation to give people a first-hand experience of what it would be like to live in a world without the systemic use of force.” Tor stands for “the onion routing project.” It was developed by the U.S.
The Untold Story of Silk Road, Part 1
In essence, Tor is a network of servers (or “nodes”) that your traffic is routed through in order to hide the origin and destination of website requests from anyone listening in to your connection, or the connection of the site you’re trying to access. Serving is the final step of the process for search engines like Google. This is when it takes a search query from the user, finds the most relevant results in the index, and then serves the resulting web pages back to the user. The terms “deep web” and “dark web” are commonly used interchangeably. Although this is accurate in terms of the underlying technology, there is a slight difference.
Under his real-life name of Ross Ulbricht, he was found guilty of several serious criminal offences in 2015, and ultimately sent to prison for life without parole. Buyers didn’t need credit cards; sellers could sell products that would banned in regular stores; and the authorities couldn’t easily control the process, or even identify the buyers and sellers involved. Network traffic in a dark web can’t easily be tracked forwards from visitor to server, or backwards from server to visitor, thus providing a measure of anonymity and untraceability. The protagonists never make it clear what exactly they are doing and why.
How Large Is the Deep Web?
It is this apparent flaw and how it erodes privacy that led to the creation of the dark web. Despite demand for legitimacy, the world of darknet markets is rife with shady characters, scams, and instability. The marketplaces are also a hotbed for cyberattacks, and the threat of law enforcement means they could be shut down at any time. The Silk Road defined its name based on the historical network of trade routes between Asia, the Middle East, East Africa, and Europe. And although the Silk Road hasn’t operated for years, it laid the foundation for other darknet markets to follow. Today, the Silk Road is an important case study when analyzing the growth of other dark web markets.
With access to Ulbricht’s Google history, FBI agents discovered that his Gmail and Silk Road account activity did line up. From left, Vincent D’Agostino, Milan Patel and Austin Berglas, former special agents with the FBI’s New York cyber branch. “They trafficked in – anything you could get in the black market – poisons, things like that,” says Vincent D’Agostino, an FBI agent with the cyber division. Silk Road, accessed anonymously by users on the dark web, brought in approximately $1 billion in sales, according to investigators, with Ulbricht making millions by taking a cut of each transaction. The dark web refers to encrypted online content that is not indexed on conventional search engines.

However, the agents had built a rapport with Ross, and he eventually brokered a deal, with nob selling his cocaine to chronicpain, one of the administrators of the site. Chronicpain, or Curtis Green, was eventually arrested and released on bail. Surprisingly, Ross thought that Green was the one who had betrayed him, and eventually asked nob if he could have Green executed. The agents complied, and staged Green’s death by emailing bloody pictures to Ross, a move which would come back to haunt him.
- The operators of Dark Web markets are separate from their vendors.
- Three young twenty-somethings get caught up in a dangerous world of deceit and betrayal as they start selling drugs on the dark web.
- As another example, a different Fraud Account made a single deposit and over 50 Bitcoin withdrawals before the account ceased its activity.
He quickly realized he’d need people to know that it existed and where to find it. Dark net is not only for criminals, we all should make sure that we use the dark net in a proper way that people will start to notice the bright sides of the dark net rather than dark sides. It’s our duty to protect our society values and we all should encourage other people to help the governing body to catch criminals in the dark web who are destroying our social values.
Tor is now the dark web browser that the vast majority of people use to anonymously surf the internet. Swensen said the most common dark web networks are Tor, I2P, and Freenet, but “Tor is, by far and away, the most popular.” It’s basically just “a series of encrypted networks that serve to anonymize peoples’ use on the internet,” said Matthew Swensen, a Special Agent for the Department of Homeland Security with an expertise in cyber crimes. And yet, the rise of the Dark Web and the proliferation of labs in places like China that are willing to make just about any drug do present a daunting new problem for law enforcement. Gary Alford, the tax investigator who unmasked Silk Road founder Dread Pirate Roberts, has revealed how he got inside the mind of the dark web’s most notorious founder, and how that ultimately led to the arrest of Ross Ulbricht.
This platform, best known for selling illegal drugs, operated out of the dark web as a Tor hidden service that would enable the users to browse it anonymously and securely. Transactions on the site were carried out with bitcoin for anonymity. Dark Web markets are the number one destination for cybercriminals who want to sell malware, ransomware-as-a-service, and databases of breached data.
